Conducting course at Broadway Music School 7/30 - 8/3

After having a very successful conducting workshop in June, there has been demand for another one before Maestro Tartaglione leaves for his teaching assistantship with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute this fall. We will be having a 5 day conducting course at Broadway Music School July 30-August 3 from 5:00 – 8:30 PM each day. Please pass the accompanying flyer on to anyone who might be interested.

9Cares Music Drive

Remember the joy you received by playing your musical instrument? There are some children who want to play, but can’t afford to rent or buy an instrument. 9News is collecting musical instruments again this year! By donating an instrument, you are giving a child the chance to create music of their own. This year, 9News will be at three local free concerts in the park collecting instruments and cash donations. Cash donations will help repair and tune donated instruments.

Mother Hopes Music Will Help Soldiers In Iraq

Union Summer: Making a Difference and Having Fun

For the past month, 48 student activists have been working on projects across the country as part of the AFL-CIO’s Union Summer, a 10-week program that began June 4.

Launched in 1996, Union Summer has graduated nearly 3,000 activists, many of whom continue to work for social justice. Past Union Summer interns have gone on to be union organizers, organizer trainers, strategic researchers and labor attorneys.

AFM President Lee Gives Congressional Testimony on Royalty Rates

Thomas F. Lee, international president of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM), AFL-CIO, today told a Congressional hearing that those most affected by the internet royalty rates set last March by the Copyright Royalty Board are the thousands of recording artists, session musicians and background vocalists that are struggling to make a living.

In Memory of Roy Pritts

Roy Pritts, educator, musician, composer, author, administrator and recording engineer died in Aurora, Colorado on June 20, 2007. He was 70. As a professional musician and composer, he was on the arranging staffs of the Martha Raye television show and the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and performed with such artists as Les Elgart, Billy May, John Denver, The Carpenters, The Fifth Dimension, Elvis Presley and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He also performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra and created multi-media compositions for the Gates Planetarium. He played trombone, piano, synthesizer and other instruments. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 29, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 11150 East Dartmouth Avenue (at Parker Road) in Aurora.

AFM re-elect Lee for third term

Delegates to the American Federation of Musicians have re-elected Thomas F. Lee for a third three-year term as president. The delegates, repping 90,000 members and meeting in Las Vegas, also voted to re-elect VP Harold Bradley and Secretary-Treasurer Sam Folio. They also tapped Bill Skolnik as VP from Canada.

Denver Municipal Band

Featured in the June, 2007 Issue of The Instrumentalist
The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the “Charge of The Light Brigade.” The Band has always been fully professional. During the early years of the century, it toured the St. Louis and San Francisco expositions and was conducted by major bandsmen including Frederick Innes, trombone soloist for Sousa, and the renowned solo cornetist, Hermann Bellstedt, Jr. (1858-1926).

AFM Supports Below-Market Royalty Rates to Subsidize Small Webcasters

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM), AFL-CIO expressed support for a proposal made yesterday by SoundExchange to extend below-market rates to certain small webcasters…“Most recording musicians, including royalty artists and session musicians, are entrepreneurs themselves,” said AFM President Thomas F. Lee. “Fifty percent of the royalties paid by webcasters go to performers, and performers surely need that income stream to make it in their own careers.

The US Coast Guard Band, Featuring Colorado's own Master Chief Musician Cheryl Six

On Monday, April 30, Commander Kenneth W. Megan, director, leads the U.S. Coast Guard Band in a patriotic performance with a line-up of superlative soloists, Dixieland jazz, and Americana. The Band’s most senior enlisted member, Master Chief Musician Cheryl Six, performs the virtuosic “Piccolo Espagnol.” Six, a native of Littleton, CO, is soon to retire from the Band after nearly thirty years of exemplary service.

RV America, Inc. a Loveland, Colorado recreational vehicle dealer will host a free pops concert on Saturday, May 5 at 2 PM. The concert is the highlight of a “guitar drive” to secure donated guitars, harmonicas and other acoustical instruments to send to our service men and women overseas. Directed by Tom Jensen of the Junior Symphony Guild and his 30- piece professional orchestra, guests will enjoy performance of classics by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky as well as music from hit movies like “The Incredibles” and “The Polar Express”.

Broadcast companies fined for pay-to-play

WASHINGTON, March 6 Four U.S. broadcast companies, together owning more than 1,500 radio stations, tentatively agreed to pay $12.5 million in fines in a pay-to-play music scheme.

In addition, the Federal Communications Commission and industry officials said the four conglomerates — Clear Channel Communications, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications and Citadel Broadcasting — agreed to provide air time for local artists and independent record labels, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

"The Foreclosure Blues"

KOA 850AM Radio featured The Foreclosure Blues, an original song by Paul Noel Fiorino. On Friday, January 26 Morning Show, Paul spoke about his experience with Colorado’s first position in foreclosures, Nationwide. Having gone through the process a few years ago, a song now expresses the feelings of a victim of circumstance as one of many. Performed by Fiorino on guitar with harmonica, he sings how he is not alone. Colorado has the most foreclosures in the Union, and is leading in this trend.

Mom pulls strings for GIs

Exploiting Youth through "Exposure"

An unfortunate situation has developed in Spokane, Washington. Our city is hosting the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships which starts next week… …the Management of the Spokane Youth Symphony – a self-described “teaching” orchestra made up of high school aged students – put in a proposal last fall to the promoters to provide music for the opening and closing ceremonies. The promoters are not paying them.

Tiny Tots Concerts 2007 - ages 3 to 6

The Junior Symphony Guild presents the 2007 Tiny Tots Concert series. Tiny Tots is a unique program to introduce children ages 3 to 6 to symphonic music. Children sit inside of a large circle of 31 professional musicians, the concerts entertain children with familiar music from TV shows, cartoons, and movies to help them discover that symphonic music is around them every day. Concerts are at various locations in the metro Denver area. Each concert lasts approximately 45 minutes. Tickets are $5 each. Concerts are January 22 to February 5, 2007.
