Upper Big Branch Mine support petition
Apr 16, 01:18 PMLast week, 29 coal miners died after a methane explosion in West Virginia.
The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster highlights why standing up for workers is so important. When workers are prevented from joining a union and standing up for their rights, companies can get away with ignoring their safety and well being.
Massey Energy, which operated this mine, has been cited for 38,997 safety violations in the last five years. This very mine had received citations for improper methane ventilation.
The unassailable fact is that union mines are much safer than non-union mines. Union miners have representation. They can refuse unsafe work. They can fight for better conditions. They can file grievances, and look out for their union brothers and sisters.
These workers deserved better – and we’ll keep fighting to make sure this kind of tragedy never happens again. But right now, I hope you’ll join us in letting their families know that you stand with them.
Please sign this petition to support the miners. Please, let their families know that you won’t forget what happened – and that they have your support.
Send a note of support to families of the miners
Thanks so much for all you do.
Sincerely,
Manny, Liz, Doug F., and the American Rights at Work team
