Performer Amy Winehouse was a legend in the making, fueled with a truly unique sound and style; at 27 she’s dead, possibly the victim of her own lyrics: “They tried to make me go to rehab; but I said no, no, no.”
Winehouse’s long struggle with substance abuse is one Marty J. Rein understands all too well.
But after battling his own addictions to drugs and alcohol, the Fort Collins bass player went on to get his master’s degree in counseling with a research background in addiction, followed by a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on human development and family studies.
“It’s a tragic loss, and people who are struggling need to know that it’s OK to ask for help,” Rein said of Winehouse’s death.
The singer was found dead Saturday in her north London home. While the cause of death is still unknown, Winehouse’s long battle with alcohol and drugs was highly publicized.
In a business where the stress level can be high and the “office” is often a bar, the road to recovery can be particularly rocky, said Rein, who also volunteers with the MusiCares Foundation, an organization that provides support for musicians and their crew who are battling substance abuse.
