The tributes honor those individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to jazz in the Five Points neighborhood and beyond. Join us at 3:00 pm at the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre. 119 Park Avenue West, to celebrate the following individuals:
Ed Battle Edward Battle has been a fixture in the Denver jazz community since moving to the city in the 1970s. Active in both the Theater and music scenes, Mr. Battle has performed with the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Shadow Theatre Company, the Horace Henderson Combo and at El Chapultepec. Mr. Battle has received numerous awards for his talent, including representing the State of Colorado at the 1997 recognition of state performers at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Mr. Battle continues his 15-year involvement as a vocalist with the Denver Jazz Orchestra.
Louise Duncan A nationally recognized musician, Denver's Louise Duncan was known as "Colorado's First Lady of Jazz" and "The Grand Lady of the Grand Piano." During her career, Mrs. Duncan played with and for many musical greats, including Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ferrante and Teicher, Eddie Condon and Vronsky and Babin. In 1969, the arthritis which had plagued her life since she was seventeen, forced her into retirement. Little by little she brought herself back and restarted her career in 1971, which lasted into the 1980s. Mrs. Duncan passed away in March of 1990.
Brad Leali A native of Denver, Colorado and graduate of George Washington High School, Brad Leali began playing saxophone at a young age, inspired by his father's jazz recordings. During his career, Mr. Leali has performed with such jazz greats as the Count Basie Orchestra, The Mingus Big Band, Nancy Wilson and Joe Williams. He has played with and directed the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra and played on the Grammy award-winning CD, "Count Plays Duke."
