CSO introduces new music director

04/28/2004

From the Rocky Mountain News:

The Colorado Symphony introduced Jeffrey Kahane as its next music director Monday, effective with the 2005-'06 season.

Kahane becomes only the second person to hold that post in the orchestra's 15-year history, succeeding Marin Alsop who was recently named conductor laureate.

The California-based conductor was "the overwhelming choice" of the board and search committee, board co-chairman Jerome Kern said at a news conference in Boettcher Concert Hall.

Kern noted that Kahane's widespread support among the CSO players was "very important" in the decision-making process.

Kahane received cheers and a champagne toast from a gathering that included Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

The conductor described his selection as "an honor."
He then paid tribute to "this amazing orchestra." Describing the CSO as "a rising star," he vowed that its star will continue to rise.

His appointment calls for the conductor to serve as music director-designate next season, then begin a three-year contract the following season. Kahane and his wife, Martha, plan to move here from California when his daughter graduates from high school.

Though he launched his musical career as a concert pianist, capturing prestigious competition wins around the world, Kahane has, since 1988, steadily built a reputation as a talented conductor.

He directs the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Santa Rosa (Calif.) Symphony, affiliations that will end by 2007.

A frequent visitor to the CSO as pianist and conductor, Kahane was already scheduled to lead the orchestra in May.

His only appearance next season will likewise come in the spring.

"I feel a familiarity with the players," he said. "I've always felt welcome here."
