The supercharged sound of Pete Wernick & FLEXIGRASS (formerly The Live Five) began as a musical experiment by “Dr. Banjo” in 1992. Fresh from 12 years with bluegrass legends Hot Rize, Wernick assembled a unit combining bluegrass with traditional jazz elements—something like a bluegrass band with banjo, bass, and… clarinet, vibraphone, and brushed drums. Originally called Pete Wernick‘s Live Five, they formed to record several cuts for a Wernick solo album. The virtuoso combo received rave reaction and became a performing band that hasn‘t stopped yet.

Surprising rule-bound traditionalists is nothing new to Wernick. Based in a thorough knowledge of musical tradition, he has long followed the lead of important musical innovators by fusing compatible sounds and holding to his long-term motto, “If it sounds good, it must be good.”

National touring from North Carolina to California, and overseas, exposure on National Public Radio, and three CDs, has spread FLEXIGRASS‘s reputation for high-energy, tightly executed, tradition-based music, and a creative spark that thrills audiences. Their latest CD, “What The”, has garnered raves and radio-play nationally and internationally.
